RIP Dick Giordano 1932 – 2010

Dick Giordano was an American comic book artist and editor best known for introducing Charlton Comics’ “Action Heroes” stable of superheroes, and serving as executive editor of then industry-leader DC Comics. As an inker, Giordano was well known for his pairings with penciler Neal Adams in a series of critically acclaimed comics featuring Batman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow.

Bob Layton has sent a message to the comics community at large today.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,
It is my sorrowful duty to announce that legendary artist/editor/entrepreneur Dick Giordano passed away today.
Few could ever hope to match what he accomplished in his chosen profession, or to excel while maintaining great humor, compassion for his peers and an unwavering love for the art form.
His unique vision changed the comic industry forever and all of those who work in the business continue to share in the benefits of his sizable contributions.
I have been honored to call him a business partner, mentor and dear friend throughout the majority of my lifetime.
We will not see his like again.

Regretfully,
Bob Layton

I meet him at the first Comic Convention that I ever went to and he was exceptionally nice.

Praeternaturals

Scott, Wayne and I submitted our comic, Praeternaturals to Zuda last night. It takes up to 90 days to hear back from them so now we are just in the waiting game.

Here’s a sample of one of the character designs that Scott did.

Inio Asano’s Solanin

I finished reading Inio Asano’s Solanin, a Japanese manga that was nominated for a 2009 Eisner Award and 2009 Harvey Award. The story is about Meiko Inoue, an office girl who can’t stand her job or her home life with boyfriend, Taneda. Together since college their lives have become more complicated since graduation. Taneda lives with Inoue but doesn’t pay rent because his work as a freelance illustrator doesn’t pay very well. At the same time Inoue questions her role in the real world and wonders what her place is in all of this.

Inoue takes the initiative and quits her job which forces Taneda to make a decision to either give up on his dream of becoming a professional musician or finally do something about it. Together with his bandmates Rip and Kato they make a demo CD and start to pursue the dream. The relationship between Inoue and Taneda remains strained as they continue towards their uncertain future.

Enjoyable and certainly captures the mindset of the 18 to 30 crowd.

Recommended.

Bad Company – The Zuda Pitch

Scott finished the pencils on Bad Company, our pitch that we plan on sending to Zuda Comics in January 2010. Wayne will finish inking and Scott will color and letter it.

Bad Company takes place in a Pittsburgh where a man returns home to find murder, theft and more.

Tom Piccirilli is Criminal

Part 3 of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Criminal: The Sinners came out last week and it was a good read. In the back of every issue is a guest essay and this one was on Korean Noir by novelist, Tom Piccirilli. It was good stuff and made even more interesting because I got my first Tom Piccirilli novel for Christmas, The Cold Spot.

Criminal: The Sinners

Made men are turning up dead in what appear to be mob-style hits, and since criminals don’t go to the cops for justice, TRACY LAWLESS has been appointed the defacto “sheriff” of the criminal underworld by his boss, Crimelord Sebastian Hyde. But Tracy is the ultimate outsider, and the cons, murderers, and thieves don’t like or trust him any more than the police do.
